Building No. 1/1 (at the corner of Pokrovska Street) was erected in 1892 at the expense of merchant, hereditary honorary citizen of Kyiv, and philanthropist Mykhailo Dehtiarov for widows with children, which is why it became known as the “House for Widows.” It was built according to the design of the renowned Kyiv architect V. Nikolaev. The three-storey brick building stands on a low plinth and has an L-shaped plan. The facade is articulated with large-order pilasters, and the chamfered corner of the building is crowned with a decorative attic.
The house is a valuable example of late-19th-century architecture that has preserved features characteristic of the Historicist style.
