Hostynnyi Dvir, 1809 (reconstructed 1980–1982), Kontraktova Square, Podil
The Hostynnyi Dvir in Kyiv is a landmark building on Kontraktova Square in the Podil district, constructed in 1809 to replace an earlier trading courtyard from the 1760s, designed by architect Ivan Hryhorovych-Barskyi.
The first reconstruction was carried out in 1828 by architect Andriy Melenskyi after a major fire. In the second half of the 19th century, the building underwent another reconstruction, during which its arched galleries were bricked up, altering its original appearance.
Between 1980 and 1982, on the occasion of Kyiv’s 1500th anniversary, the structure was rebuilt under the supervision of architect V. Shevchenko, who restored the monument to its original Classical design.
The present-day two-storey brick building, plastered and painted, has a rectangular plan in the form of a closed courtyard (carre) with an open central courtyard featuring six entrances with metal gates. The outer façades are surrounded by arched galleries, adorned with pilasters, and painted in yellow and white tones, reflecting the elegance and harmony of early 19th-century Classicism.
