Complex of the Greek St. Catherine’s Monastery

The Greek St. Catherine’s Monastery was founded in the 18th century by Greek colonists in 1738. The Greek community built a wooden chapel on the estate of the merchant Astamathios Timati.

Between 1739 and 1741, a masonry three-domed church was constructed on the same site in the Ukrainian Baroque style, located behind the present-day bell tower. In 1748, the Greek–Sinai Monastery of St. Catherine was officially established at the church.

In the early 1920s, the monastery was closed, and in 1929, the church building was demolished due to the poor condition of its walls.

Despite its loss, the monastery remains an important part of the spiritual and architectural history of Kyiv’s Greek community, symbolizing the cultural diversity of 18th-century Podil.
