Complex of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross “Na Kozhumiakakh”

The Complex of the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross “Na Kozhumiakakh” includes the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross with its bell tower, the entrance gate, the fence with a chapel, the Chapel of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, and the clergy house.

The complex was formed in several stages. The first wooden church on this site was likely built in the 15th century as a parish church for the Kozhumiaky settlement. In 1748, it was replaced by a new wooden church, dedicated in memory of the ancient Exaltation Church that once stood on Andriivskyi (formerly Vozdvyzhenskyi) Descent.

During the devastating fire of 1811, the wooden church was destroyed. That same year, construction began on a new stone church, which was consecrated in 1841. In 1886–1887, the building was significantly expanded, and between 1901 and 1905, a two-storey stone annex was added to the north side of the church.

The interior paintings, created by Hryhorii Svitlytskyi, date back to the early 20th century.

Today, the complex remains a valuable example of Kyiv’s religious and architectural heritage, reflecting the historical continuity of the Kozhumiaky district.
