Traditional festive attire of the late 19th to early 20th century

Ivan Honchar Museum

Traditional festive attire of Ukrainians varies in cut and decoration depending on the region. Presented here are men's, women's, and children's costumes from Pokuttia and the Central Dnieper region. Festive clothing was made from both homemade and factory-made natural materials, including fine bleached linen and hemp fabric, woolen homemade fabric with colorful patterns, locally woven silk fabric, leather, and fur. The attire was richly decorated with embroidery using various techniques and appliqué. Costume sets were always complemented by jewelry made of precious materials such as coral, pearls, silver, Venetian glass, and beads, as well as accessories. Children's clothing replicated the silhouette and decorations of adult outfits, with differences only in status markers: the headgear of a married woman, the wreath and ribbons of an unmarried girl, and beaded ornaments on men's hats.
