Veles is the Slavic patron of wealth, trade and livestock. He’s also the ruler of the underground kingdom. Despite the fact that he was often called second in importance after Perun, the idol of Veles was not located in the princely pantheon on Old Kyiv Hill but in Podil.
Although this is only natural, because Podil itself was considered the epicentre of trade and crafts at that time. According to chronicles, following the baptism of Rus in 988, the idol of the ‘pagan god’ was knocked down and thrown into the Pochaina River. But the cult of Veles was so significant that we can still find its reminiscences: in the Christian Saint Vlasia, in placenames, holidays, and popular culture. There is even a mountain in Antarctica named after him.
