Viktor Tsoi's tree

In July 1986, the short film "The End of Vacation," directed by Ukrainian filmmaker Serhiy Lysenko, was shot near Lake Telbin, just a few weeks after the Chernobyl disaster. The film features Viktor Tsoi, a musician (of Kazakh descent) and the lead of the band "Kino." The group performed several of their songs in the film, and Tsoi's involvement helped elevate it to cult status. A tree by the lake, where the film's opening scenes were shot, became known as "Viktor Tsoi's Tree."

This iconic tree is a 60-year-old willow, standing 18 meters tall with three trunks, each measuring over half a meter in diameter. Nearby, a large bench invites visitors to sit, pay tribute to the musician, or simply take in the beautiful surroundings.

In February 2020, the tree was designated as a botanical natural monument of local importance, receiving special status from the Kyiv City Administration. This status prohibits any construction, felling, or even sanitary pruning around the tree.

Each year, fans of the legendary poet and musician gather near this old willow by Lake Telbin. These gatherings typically take place on June 21, Viktor Tsoi's birthday, and August 15, the anniversary of his passing. Fans of the band "Kino" bring their musical instruments, and the improvised concerts often last throughout the evening, celebrating its enduring legacy.
