Termen Fountain is one of the ecological symbols of Kyiv and an example of a conscious attitude to the environment. This is one of the seven fountains that decorated Kyiv in the early 20th century (only 5 have survived). The fountains were cast at Oleksii Termen’s Kyiv Machine-Building Plant to the design of architect Alexander Schiele. The cast iron from which the structures were made was obtained through recycling — reprocessing of raw materials.
Scrap metal, which was accumulated in large quantities at Kyiv enterprises, was taken to the factory and the main elements were cast from it based on the Parisian fountain from the Place des Vosges. At different times, the fountain served the Kyivites well: water was drawn from it for household needs, horses and cattle were watered here, and its water was even used for extinguishing fires. Now, the function of the fountain is to create a unique microclimate for the park’s ecosystem.
