About the place

The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, established in 1615 and known locally as ‘Mohylianka’, is a descendant of one of the oldest universities in Central and Eastern Europe. In 1632, Petro Mohyla founded the Kyiv-Brotherhood College on its basis; in 1819, the Kyiv Theological Academy was set up in its place. In 1918, it was closed and the buildings were handed over to the Dnieper Military Flotilla. The Academy was restored only in 1992.

The university complex includes the old academic or Mazepa building (17th century), the new building constructed under the leadership of Andrii Melenskyi in the 1920s, the oldest survived civil building in Kyiv, i.e., the House of Halshka Hulevychivna, also known as Povarnya (17th century), and the bursa building (18th century).
