About the place

Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is an Orthodox monastery complex founded in 1051, one of the largest Christian sanctuaries in the country, a monument of history and architecture, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Monastery is divided into two parts:

  • the upper one encompasses the Dormition Cathedral, the Trinity Church, the Museum of Books and Printing of Ukraine, the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art, the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema of Ukraine, the Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine, and other buildings that are part of the National Kyiv-Pechersk Historical Cultural Preserve;
  • the Lower Monastery encompasses the Near and Far Caves, where the relics of the Monastery’s founders, Anthony and Theodosius, are kept.
