The new ‘Crystal Wailing Wall’ installation in the Babyn Yar Holocaust Memorial Centre was unveiled in October 2021, on the 80th anniversary of the mass executions of Kyivites (mostly Jews and Roma) by the Nazis. The monument is one of the largest art objects built during the last decade in Europe. It was created by the famous artist of Serbian origin, Marina Abramović. The installation takes the form of a black anthracite wall studded with 75 quartz crystals at the level of the head, heart and abdomen. They symbolise light and darkness, which, according to the author, continue to exist in Babyn Yar.
