The city of Kyiv is illuminated by legends and celebrated in songs and tales. Strolling through the historic center is truly captivating. Old streets and squares are rich with ancient artifacts of history, blending seamlessly with the ultra-modern buildings of this dynamic European capital. During our journey through the historical heart of Kyiv, we'll explore the most iconic and intriguing sites. While we’ll primarily be walking, there are also dedicated bicycle paths along the central streets, parks, and squares, so you can easily choose to cycle as well.
Welcome to Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or (Independence Square). We'll begin our exploration of the historic center of Kyiv right here in the heart of the city. This central square is bordered by nine major streets, with Khreshchatyk Street being the most significant. Its modern appearance was shaped by a reconstruction in 2001, which introduced the Monument of Independence of Ukraine.
You’ll also find monuments honoring the Founders of Kyiv—brothers Kyi, Shchek, Horiv, and their sister Lybid—as well as the legendary Cossack Mamai. Nearby, the reconstructed Lyadski Gate serves as a reminder of the ancient city’s main entrance.
Just steps away from the General Post Office, you’ll find Kilometre Zero, marked with distances to various world capitals. The square is also home to unique buildings such as the National Academy of Music, the General Post Office, and the House of Trade Unions. In 2017, light and musical fountains were added, enhancing the charm of this vibrant gathering place.
