About the place
The Lanterns in Love monument is one of Kyiv’s art objects dedicated to the bright and eternal feeling of love. The monument was erected on the eve of St. Valentine in 2009. Its author is the famous Kyiv sculptor Volodymyr Bilokon. It is interesting that the monument was repeatedly ‘dressed up’.
For a while, the ‘lantern boy’ was dressed in a green suit, and the ‘lantern girl’ was dressed in a pink dress. In 2014, the ‘couple in love’ changed their clothes to embroidered dresses with Ukrainian ornaments. In 2018, the lanterns in love had ‘children’, as the author supplemented the art object with two small lanterns and jokingly named them ‘twin boys’. The Lanterns in Love monument is a symbolic site because these lanterns can fulfil the lovers’ wishes and dreams if the latter take a sit next to them.
