Lilac garden

The Lilac Garden, or Syringa Garden, is one of the most beautiful and distinctive exhibition areas at the National Botanical Garden. Construction began in 1948, and it now spans 2.45 hectares. The collection features 10 out of the 12 natural species of lilac found worldwide, along with several hybrids developed by breeders.

With 1,500 bushes representing 102 varieties, the garden showcases some truly remarkable blooms. The first lilac varieties, Andeken Ludwig Spaeth and Michel Buchner, were brought from Germany in 1946. Research and breeding efforts at the botanical garden started in 1957, leading to the creation of notable varieties such as Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, Taras Bulba, Vohni Donbasu(The lights of Donbass), and Lesya Ukrainka. The latter boasts 35 to 50 petals, making it one of the most double-flowered lilacs around.

Among the collection is the Eastern Carpathian lilac, which is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, and the unique Primrose variety, the only yellow lilac in the world. Nestled on the slopes, the Lilac Garden offers a stunning panorama of the Dnipro River and the Vydubychi Monastery. During the blooming season, the garden draws numerous visitors, captivating them with its unique beauty and the luxurious aroma of lilacs that enhances every stroll.
