Trukhaniv Island is the largest of Kyiv's islands and one of the oldest on the Dnipro River. According to legend, its name is linked to the Polovtsian khan Tugorkhan, whose daughter, married to Prince Svyatopolk Izyaslavych of Kyiv, had a summer residence here. Another tale suggests that the island was often filled with dust (“trukha” in Ukrainian) due to persistent flooding.
For a time, it served as the border between the Kyiv and Chernihiv provinces. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Trukhaniv hosted steamship repair workshops, the "Ermitage" country park, the luxurious "Bosphor" restaurant, a biostation, a yacht club, and the settlement of watermen, which frequently suffered from floods. In September 1943, the Germans burned the settlement to the ground. After the war, it was not rebuilt, and eventually, a recreation area was developed on the island.
Today, Trukhaniv Island boasts several beaches, including Central Beach, along with rental offices, sports facilities, and entertainment complexes. The island is beautifully landscaped, featuring unique vegetation. A popular bicycle route runs through it, and after renovations in 2020, new illuminated recreational spaces and an entrance area were added, enhancing its appeal for visitors.
