Christer’s oak tree

The ancient Christer’s oak tree, located in Christer Park, is recognized as a botanical natural landmark of local significance. Scientists estimate this oak to be around 700 years old, with a trunk circumference exceeding 6 meters and a height of 25 meters. It was named after the prominent Kyiv gardener W. Christer, who played a crucial role in earning Kyiv the reputation as one of the "greenest" capitals in Europe. According to legend, the renowned poet Taras Shevchenko enjoyed resting in the shade of this majestic oak. In 2008, a campaign titled "Don't go up the flume!" (Do not damage the Oak!) was launched to protect this tree, during which participants hung an environmental protection sign on it and installed a temporary fence to safeguard its surroundings.
