About the place
Mezhyhirska Street, one of the most important transport arteries of Podil, received its modern name in 1869. It is associated with the Cossack yard that existed in this area and was part of Mezhyhirskyi monastery.
The Street begins in the main square of Podil, so its history is largely connected with contract fairs. Its House No. 1 is the famous House of Contracts.
Mezhyhirska is clearly divided into two parts. The first one is Podilska Street near Kontraktova Ploshcha (the Square of Contracts) where wealthy burghers lived. The second was behind the Vals where workers, or the so-called proletariat, lived. This greatly affected the architecture of the Street’s buildings.
