Yaroslaviv Val Street

Yaroslaviv Val Street runs alongside the remnants of the former city rampart, constructed during the time of Yaroslav the Wise in the 12th century. This historic name is the origin of the modern street’s title. The defensive rampart system stood until the 1830s–1850s. Unique buildings line the street, including the Pidhorskyi building, known as "Baron's Castle," where the main characters of Lada Luzina's novel "Kyiv Witches" reside in the tower. Nearby, you’ll find the former Karaite church-house, “Kenasa,” designed by architect Horodetskyi, which now serves as the Actor's House. The Sikorskyi building once housed the headquarters of the Kyiv Air Defense Corps during World War II. Also noteworthy is the former house of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Trade of the Ukrainian Socialist Soviet Republic. There is the building with the bread shops, dating back to the 1860s -70s and commercial apartment buildings constructed in 1906 -1911.

Additionally, the former city elementary school named after M. Tereshchenko, now the Ivan Karpenko-Kary Kyiv National University of Theater, Cinema, and Television, enrich the street's historical landscape.
