It is considered the oldest in Kyiv. Rye Market existed on this site during the times of Kyivan Rus, and in the 15th century it was the main trading center of the city, where fairs were held twice a year, folk festivities with a carnival climb to Shchekavytsa Mountain were held. The modern market building was built in 1980. It is considered a cultural heritage of modernism. The facade of the market is decorated with a metal panel “From the Varangians to the Greeks” by artist Anatoly Domnych. The market has dairy, meat, fruit and vegetable, and fish departments. There are several shops with flowers, seeds, clothing, and shoes. Rye Market is surrounded by churches: the Church of Mykola Prytysk, the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and the buildings of the Florovsky Convent.
