Kushnir Guild House, 1799

The Kushnir (Furriers’) Guild House, built in 1799 on the guild’s estate, is one of the few surviving brick buildings of the late 18th century that partially withstood the 1811 Podil fire. Originally a single-storey structure, it was reconstructed in 1858 according to a design by architect M. Samonov, commissioned by the estate’s owner, merchant of the 2nd guild H. Pokrovskyi.

The building is brick, two storeys high, with an attic and basement, and has an L-shaped plan featuring a driveway leading into the courtyard. Its façades are designed in Classical style, characterized by symmetry and restrained decorative elements.

The monument is an integral part of the historical development of Kontraktova Square and holds value as one of the finest surviving examples of Classicism in Kyiv.
