Complex of Charitable Institutions of F. A. Tereshchenko

The estate of Clinical Hospital No. 15 (Buildings 9 and 11) at 49 Nyzhnii Val Street, located in the Podil district of Kyiv, occupies the historic grounds of the charitable institutions founded by philanthropist Fedir Artemovych Tereshchenko (1832–1894). Two buildings, erected in the late 19th century, have been preserved within the estate.

Building No. 9 (formerly Tereshchenko’s Free Apartments House) stands in the rear part of the estate, behind the former maternity shelter. It is a two-storey brick structure with a semi-basement, T-shaped in plan. Its architecture is characterized by restrained decorative detailing and functional composition, typical of social-purpose buildings of the period.

Building No. 11 (formerly the Maternity Hospital) is set back from the street line, fronted by a cour d’honneur, and enclosed by a brick fence with low metal railings. It is a single-storey brick building with a semi-basement and a rectangular plan. The design emphasizes symmetry and simplicity, expressing the utilitarian yet dignified character of Tereshchenko’s charitable architecture.

On the adjacent plot, facing the frontage of Building No. 11, stands the former Night Shelter of F. Tereshchenko (49-A Nyzhnii Val Street). It is a three-storey brick building, elongated in depth, with its main façade oriented toward the street.

Together, these structures form a coherent architectural ensemble representing the philanthropic and social welfare initiatives of the Tereshchenko family and stand as valuable examples of Kyiv’s late-19th-century public architecture.
