The main square of Kyiv is located between the nine central streets of the capital - Khreshchatyk, Borys Grinchenko, Sofiyska, Malaya Zhytomyrska, Mykhailivska, Kostelna, Arkhitektora Horodetskyi, Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred and Taras Shevchenko Lane. The square acquired its modern appearance after reconstruction in 2001. Then the first large underground shopping mall in Ukraine "Globus" was opened here, the Independence Monument was installed, monuments to the founders of Kyiv and the Cossack Mamai were erected.
Among other landmarks on the square are the Lyadsky Gate - a copy of one of the gates that led to Ancient Kyiv, Zero Kilometer - a reference mark for the distance between the cities of Ukraine and the capitals of the world, the Pyotr Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music - the oldest musical institution of higher education; the Main Post Office, the House of Trade Unions. In 2017, light and music fountains were opened on the square.
