It is the main sports and event arena of the country, accommodating 70,050 spectators. The first stadium was opened here in 1923. During its history, it was reconstructed 5 times and renamed 9 times.
After the reconstruction in 1966, with a capacity of more than 100,000 spectators, the stadium became the largest in the USSR and Europe. In 1980, the stadium hosted the Olympic football tournament, and in 2012, the UEFA European Football Championship tournament, during the preparation for which the stadium was renovated and received its modern look. In 2018, the final of the UEFA Champions League was held here. Today, it is not only a football arena, but also a multifunctional complex, where concerts of the world’s most famous and Ukrainian stars (Madonna, Shakira, Dua Lipa, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kasabian performed on the stage; as well as the Okean Elzy (Elza’s Ocean) band whose concert was gathered the record-breaking audience in Ukraine), festivals (U-Park), business and other events take place.
