Taras Shevchenko Park

The park occupies a city block bounded by Volodymyrska Street, Tereshchenkivska Street, Pavlo Skoropadskyi Street, and Taras Shevchenko Boulevard. Its main entrance is situated opposite the main (Red) Building of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. The park has a rectangular layout, harmoniously integrated with the surrounding urban environment.

The main compositional axis — a transverse alley — is oriented directly toward the portico of the University’s Red Building. A longitudinal alley, perpendicular to it, leads toward the former First Gymnasium building (now 14 Taras Shevchenko Boulevard). At the intersection of these two alleys lies a circular plaza featuring the monument to Taras Shevchenko, which serves as both the compositional and symbolic centerpiece of the park.

The park’s diagonal alleys originate from four corner entrances, and at their intersections with the longitudinal alley are two symmetrically placed fountain plazas. The lawns and green parterres between the alleys contain rows, clusters, and solitary plantings of trees and shrubs. The dominant species include maple, sycamore, linden, chestnut, ash, and elm, creating a lush and balanced composition typical of 19th–20th-century landscape design in Kyiv.
