At the time of its construction in 1899–1902, it was the tallest residential building in Kyiv. The Syrotkin apartment building, designed by the architectural firm of Shyman and Gilevich in the Neo-Renaissance style with elements of early modernism, is one of the most beautiful buildings in the historic center of Kyiv.
It attracted attention throughout its existence. The construction progress was covered in newspapers. The architect was criticized for violating the law, and the Marquise confectionery, luxurious apartments, and furnished rooms of Palermo located there were written about in directories. During Soviet times, the famous Leipzig restaurant with German cuisine and the first cocktail bar in Kyiv opened here.
At the end of the 20th century, the facades of the Syrotkin building were reconstructed, and later it was planned to equip a hotel here. But for several years now, all restoration processes have been frozen.
