This is an ancient tract on the slope of St. Michael’s Hill. Legend says, one of the main pagan temples of Kyiv with a huge idol of Perun was located there. When, during the baptism of Rus, it was dragged down to the Dnieper, the devil screamed so loudly that the Kyivites could not forget it for a long time, and that is why they gave the tract such a name. The place had enjoyed a bad reputation for a long time. In the Middle Ages, it was believed that witches flocked here for a coven. However, in the mid-19th century, a pharmacy was built at the foot of the mountain in Podil, and terrible legends were forgotten.
Today, nothing reminds here of its mysterious past. The ancient St. Michael’s Golden Domed Cathedral stands on the site of the pagan temple, and down the slope, Volodymyrska Hirka (St. Volodymyr Hill) Park was made; and the funicular line opened in 1905 passes through the ravine through which the fallen pagan god was once dragged.
