This is a unique transportation system, which has connected the Upper City with Podil in 1905. Kyiv funicular became the second one in Ukraine after the funicular in Odesa. The length of the route is 222 meters, although at the time of its opening, the route was shorter and reached only Borychiv Tik. Until the 1930s, the funicular was considered part of the city’s tram network.
It acquired its modern appearance in 1984. Тhen, a general reconstruction was carried out, and new entrance halls were built; those were decorated with stained glass windows by Ukrainian artists Valentyn Zadorozhnyi and Mykola Shkaraputa.
Kyiv funicular is regarded an architectural monument and the safest transport in the capital. In its more than 100-year history, there has been only one accident, and even that was without casualties.
