One of the oldest in the capital, it originates at the top of Starokyivska Gora. The section of the street from the Tithe Church to the Sophia Gate appeared at the end of the 10th century. After the final demolition in the 19th century of the remains of the ancient defensive ramparts and the Starokyivska Fortress, some parts of Andriyivska, Sophia and Zolotaya streets were united and leveled. The new street was named Volodymyrska, in honor of Saint Volodymyr, the Baptist of Rus. Today it is one of the most attractive tourist spots in Kyiv, as unique monuments from different historical periods have been preserved here - St. Sophia Cathedral, the remains of the Golden Gate, the buildings of Kyiv University, the Pedagogical Museum, the Opera House, the Presidium of the NAS of Ukraine and dozens of other important public buildings.
The archaeological complex on Starokyivska Gora has no analogues in Europe.
