Castle Hill (Kyselivka, Khorevytsia, Florivska/Frolivska Hill) – a hillside and historical area in the Podil district of Kyiv. Originally, Castle Hill formed a single topographical formation with Andriivska Hill, but it gradually became separated during the construction of defensive moats around the castle and the creation of the road connecting the Upper Town with Podil (now Andriivskyi Descent). The hill has the shape of a natural fortification, with steep slopes and surrounding ravines resembling defensive ditches.
All its historical names — Castle Hill, Kyselivka, and Florivska — have survived to this day. The central architectural complex was the new Kyiv Castle, built on the high hill in the 14th–15th centuries. Among the locals, it was known as the “Lithuanian Castle,” and the hill still bears the name Castle Hill.
The name Kyselivka is associated with Adam Kysil, the Kyiv Voivode who had his residence in the castle in the mid-17th century. The third name, Florivska, derives from the Florivsky (Frolivsky) Convent, which was founded at the foot of the hill in the 17th century. Later, the hill belonged to the monastery, and a monastic cemetery was located on its grounds.
