The oldest known name of the area is the Zborych Hill. In pre-Christian times, a Slavic temple with an idol of Perun on its top was situated there. The legend says that in the 1st century, a cross consecrated by Andrew the First-Called was installed in its place. In the 11th century, the Yanchyn Nunnery with the first women’s embroidery school in Rus was founded there. Until the 15th century, this area was part of the Old Kyiv Hill . In the 13th–18th centuries, the Holy Cross Church and the Apothecary Garden were situated there. The contemporary name was fixed just in the second half of the 18th century when St. Andrew’s Church was built on the Hill in honour of Andrew the First-Called to the design of Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
